Other then the most important asset of being trained by an institution who trains their students to develop their skills to the maximum of their potential. The less obvious and yet as important it’s the ability to stand out over the rest of the crowd. It can be used as an effective marketing strategy to find clients. People what to work with “experts” people that are recognized in the field as thought leaders and people with accreditation under their belt.
Accreditation is not to be confused with a life coach certification. The main reason for that is that in order to be certified each student must complete a certain amount of training hours, coaching hours and have proof of acquiring such times. They are required to write a papers, completed coaching hours as both a coach and a as a coaching client.

ICF is the governing body that manages the integrity of the nonprofit body of life coaching. While they are not specifically affiliated to any other school they are who put each participating school under the microscope and inquiry if they meet the requirements to train students. Accreditation on the other hand does not have any immediate requirements in order to obtain such credentials. Most professional therapists, physiologists and the like are less inclined to spend another two years in the process of obtaining a certification and the life coaching accreditation route is much more feasible. They would simply have to study the material that is provided to them by the accrediting body, spend some time studying the material and take the test.
Upon successfully completing and passing the test they can now be considered accredited without all the additional hours of training required. This is perhaps a more feasible route if the student has at least 1000 logged hours in their current profession.

ICF recognizes the following avenues for life coaching certification:
Associate certified Coach (ACC)

A minimum of 100 coaching hours and at least 8 clients, and as of July 1,2008 they are required to have 10 logged hours of work with a qualified mentor. This will be what is important to complete the life coach program.

Professional Certified Coach (PCC)

Requires a set amount of hours of training both on the phone with live instructors, course works, written papers and exams. In additional they require 750 total logged hours of experience with one to one clients. And a minimum of 25 clients. This is the next path of certification from the ACC.

Master Certified Coach

This certification is reserved exclusively for those who have been coaching already for a number of years, have a minimum of 2,500 logged coaching hours and a minimum of 35 clients. They are also required to accumulate a certain amount of training hours by an certifiable school with the ICF seal of approval.
