Midwifery Courses Overview & Midwife Courses Requirements

A career as a midwife consists of delivering babies along with providing prenatal and postpartum care to women. Midwife courses train one to recognize signs and symptoms that differ from normal conditions in a woman that is pregnant.  To become a midwife, the training and education is concentrated and demanding.

Midwife training courses will help one to study for either a three-year diploma or a four-year degree.  The courses consists of learning the theory along with working in a hospital.  There are specialties that one can also concentrate on if they chose.  Some of these particular concentrations include nursing, mental health disorders and learning disabilities.  Once a person has completed a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, they can then go on to obtain a Masters in Midwifery or Nursing.  If somebody is already a Registered Nurse, one must complete a postgraduate class in midwifery to become a Registered Midwife.

Midwife courses are offered all over the world.  Some of these schools are private nonprofits that offer training for direct entry into the field of being a doula, midwife or childbirth educators.  A person needs to make sure that the school they chose to attend is accredited by the state.  Without this accreditation, you will not be able to become licensed since the school does not meet the requirements mandated by the state.  This rewarding career has become very popular over the years, so more schools are offering this program as a major.

Midwifery training programs consist of many science and psychology classes.  Most schools require a minimum of 1,350 clinical hours of training and being supervised by a licensed midwife.  Every few years the midwife is required to obtain more education and apply for recertification.  The cost associated with obtaining a degree in midwifery depends on what school a person chooses to attend.  Since most schools require a four-year degree, the average four-year school can run between $30,000 to $100,000.  If you chose a school that is not located in the state in which you live, you can expect to pay more money for being a nonresident.

A career as a midwife is very extensive, but also very rewarding.  People that chose this as their profession say that they really enjoy going to work and helping others.  One thing to keep in mind is that a person must sometimes seek out their own clients and advertise their services, since a midwife often times is independently employed.  Be sure to research the price of the school and make sure that they are accredited to be offering midwifery as a major.
