Why Chiropody Courses Make A Great Career Choice

Today’s chiropody courses prepare the foot care specialist for a professional career in allied medicine.  Chiropody and podiatry are often used interchangeably. Students must take three to five years of special focus undergraduate education.  Not too long ago, those aiming for a career in foot care could obtain certificates to practice.  However, requirements are stricter now.  This helps ensure professionalism in the field.

A chiropody course of study requires the undergrad to pass standard requirements at his or her college or university and take medical classes as well. Core classes include:

  • Biomechanics,
  • Podopediatrics,
  • Orthotics, and
  • Surgery

In biomechanics, the chiropody podiatry students will discover an area vital to the general practice of foot care.  They learn to diagnose misalignment problems and muscle movement in lower legs, ankles and feet.

Podopediatrics covers the treatment of foot problems in babies and children.
In orthotics classes, students learn to use custom shoe inserts to help alleviate pain and support joints.

In podiatry and chiropody studies, undergraduate surgery classes will give enough instruction to allow the students eventually to assist with foot surgeries. Further study at the postgraduate level may be necessary to qualify the practitioners to perform surgery themselves on an outpatient basis.

Educational costs vary widely since students can build toward their specialty by starting at a two-year college, for example.  Some may opt for technical colleges, while others will attend other public or private colleges and universities. At least some of the required coursework is available at on-line schools. Federal government aid and grants from private donors can also affect the cost of a student’s education. Checking with specific institutions of higher learning will provide the most up-to-date costs. Their financial aid offices can also give applicants a better idea of additional costs such as housing and books.

Once they have been fully licensed, practitioners can specialize in several different areas.  These include biomechanics, pediatrics, geriatrics, orthopedics, sports medicine and surgery. Geriatrics lets the practitioner work with the aging population whose numbers are rising daily. Sports medicine is a popular area of practice dealing with both professional and casual athletes.

Chiropody jobs are available worldwide. In USD, one can earn an average salary of some $70,000 upwards of $115,000.  The best-paid U.S. jobs in the field happen to be in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.  The more training one has obtained, the better.  Salaries increase with further education.
